Research Position Available

State of the Region-Report 2007: COMPANY ACTIVITIES IN THE BALTIC SEA REGION: RESEARCH POSITION AVAILABLE. Since 2004, the State of the Region-Report presents a comprehensive overview of the competitiveness of the Baltic Sea Region. Launched at the annual Summit of the Baltic Development Forum, the Report has become a widely used reference tool for public and private leaders that are working on improving competitiveness in the Region. The Report is available at the website of the Baltic Development Forum, www.bdforum.org.

Alongside the annual update of indicators of economic performance and competitiveness, each Report also includes a special section on different themes. In 2006, we looked at efforts under way in the Region to improve competitiveness. In 2005, we took a more in-depth look on areas we viewed as action priorities for the Region.
For 2007, we plan to take the company perspectives in this special section and review from different angles the role that the Baltic Sea Region and its competitiveness play for companies operating here. The work will be based on published studies and data sets but we also plan a survey and in-depth interviews with executives from the Region.

We are looking for researchers that might be interested to work with us on this topic. The work will take place between March and October 2007, and we except the workload to correspond to a 25% to 50%-position over this period. A PhD-student or recent post-doc with work related to this area, for example in international business or company strategy, would be the ideal candidate. Graduate students close to their exams with relevant experience will also be considered. The funding we can provide is similar to comparable research positions at universities in the region.

Please contact Dr. Christian Ketels (cketels@hbs.edu), Harvard Business School and Stockholm School of Economics, for more information. Interested applicants can also directly send their CV and a short cover letter.

Research questions to be looked at

  • In what industries is the Baltic Sea Region an integrated market? If markets are not integrated, how do their structures typically differ across the Region?
  • Do companies organize their activities and reporting structures on the level of the Baltic Sea Region?
  • For which activities is the Baltic Sea Region the home base of global market responsibility in internationally active companies?
  • How do companies view the current activities by the public sector to upgrade the competitiveness of the Baltic Sea Region? How are companies engaged in such initiatives/how do they want to be engaged?
