About CEBAST

The Centre for Baltic Studies was established in 2002 by decision of the rectors’ assembly of the Øresund University to create a frame for research and education networking within language/cultural studies and social sciences. Participating partners were Copenhagen Business School, Lund University, Roskilde University and University of Copenhagen within the Øresund University network.
Today the centre has been renamed Centre for Baltic Sea Region Studies and has become independent of the Øresund University
The direct occasion for establishing a Centre for Baltic Studies was the white paper by the Danish and Swedish governments 'En region bliver til' (1999) (A region in the making). The white paper outlined the emerging Øresund Region and its potential as a positive influence on cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region. One suggestion was that the region's small university disciplines and departments should cooperate to ensure continued development.
In a wider perspective, the need for Baltic Studies is also linked to developements in the Baltic Sea area after 1989. In the Eastern part of the region the transition has caused great political, economical and cultural changes. This has also altered relations between the countries around the Baltic Sea.
The accession of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to the European Union, has only stressed the importance of enhancing the level of research, education and information on these countries and their relations to other countries in the Baltic Sea Region and in Europe.
